chazWelcome to the 15 September Warehouse & Logistics News. This month the focus in our industry is firmly on fork lift truck safety, both for drivers and crucially, for pedestrians in working areas where fork lifts operate. The message is clear – whether you run one fork lift truck or hundreds, you can’t afford to get complacent about how you use the equipment in your business.

The National Fork Lift Safety Week returns from 21st-27th September. All this month the Fork Lift Truck Association is offering free safety resources like posters and DVDs at its website www.fork-truck.org.uk to help truck users make the most of this important chance to improve safety awareness.

This month also sees the FLTA’s 2009 Safety Conference at Warwick University on Friday 30th September, with the theme “Understanding and Communicating the Risks.” Once again the FTLA have asked Warehouse & Logistics News to be media partners, and as the UK’s only fortnightly title for the industry we are proud to publish a Safety supplement in this issue to coincide with this important event.

Also in this bumper issue we have a major profile on Traka plc, the key control specialists, and an exclusive interview with B&M Associates, the pallet management experts, which leads our Pallet Management feature.

Led by John Kent, Traka plc’s Chairman, Traka has tried and tested its award-winning Traka key control system in exacting conditions, and it is in worldwide use 24 hours a day, all year round in a host of different industry sectors. One of Traka’s biggest achievements in the warehouse and logistics marketplace is a long-term relationship with Tesco, with Traka providing the Immobilisor system for Tesco’s fork lift truck fleet at their UK DC’s.

B&M Associates, based in Melton Mowbray, is one of our longest established pallet management companies, helping customers make significant cost savings in their use of pooled pallets from Chep and LPR and their associated systems by introducing new best practice procedures and reporting methods. Starting in 1990 with a single client, B&M now tracks over 10 million pallet movements a year throughout Europe for clients from hauliers to major blue chip companies.

Also in this issue we have our scheduled Warehouse Management Systems feature, including stories from Belgravium, Proteus and Vocollect. And don’t miss Episode 42 in our exclusive History of The Fork Lift Truck, written by James Brindley, Director of the National Fork Truck Heritage Centre. We’ve now reached 1964, the year of the Ninth Mechanical Handling Exhibition at Earls Court, when the big news included Lansing Bagnall innovating with narrow aisle reach trucks.

Happy reading!
