The Fork Lift Truck Association’s seventh annual National Fork Lift Truck Safety Conference will take place at Warwick University Arts Centre on Wednesday 30th September 2009 – and, as ever, it promises to be packed full of useful information.

This year’s theme, Understanding and Communicating the Risks, covers a full programme of presentations that will show what the fork lift truck industry is doing – and what individuals can do – to combat potential safety threats in the workplace.

To find out about this year’s speakers, read on.

simulator-logimat-2009-1The national Safety Conference addresses the issues and problems which directly impact upon your business. An expert line-up is on hand for the full-day event to deliver the practical guidance fork lift truck users want and – more importantly – need.

It’s a full day event, for which tickets are priced at just £91.00 (inc VAT) for members of the FLTA or its Safe User Group and £122.00 (inc VAT) for non-members. The price includes refreshments and documentation.

Understanding and Communicating the Risks

The view from the top: an expert opinion

Manager of the HSE Workplace Transport Programme, Carol Grainger is one of the Executive’s foremost experts on fork lift truck safety. Using real examples, Carol will explain current trends and concerns, and reveal new research into the root causes of fork lift truck accidents.

A fresh look

sainsburys-use-caption-calor-will-discuss-safety-issues-relating-to-the-use-of-lpgLuke Elmer, of the University of the West of England, brings new insight to safe fork lift truck operations, presenting his original dissertation, Fork Lift Truck Safety in the Workplace. He will discuss his research into the vital issues involved and introduce delegates to the new product he designed in response.

A picture is worth a thousand words

Risk assessments are an essential tool for clarifying and communicating risks… but who really reads and understands them? Ian Cook of Articulate Solutions has come up with a new means of communicating this vital information, in a way that will engage colleagues easily. Case studies will show just how this innovative approach works and what benefits it can bring to an organisation as a whole.

Instant information

A Safety finalist at the FLTA Awards 2009, Crown Lift Trucks’ Infolink™ fleet management system allows for innovative two-way messaging between the operator and management. The system’s lift truck sensors transmit data in real time and response is made directly to the operator/truck. Dave Allison from Crown will show how it works and describe its benefits – the focus will be on safety, but also the potential impact upon productivity and costs.

Bringing it all together – and how!

The true stories of real businesses that got it wrong… and right – including how FLTA Safe Site Award winner City of London Corporation reduced accidents at New Spitalfields Market by a staggering 77%.

LPG safety masterclass

By its very nature, LP gas requires a thorough understanding of hazard identification and safe practice. Conference sponsor Calor has an impressive reputation for supporting the safe operations of thousands of businesses across the UK and is exceptionally well placed to discuss this subject. This session will explore the risks and explain what should be done to minimise the dangers involved.

Safety solutions – Good vibrations

Vibration is rarely considered a safety issue – but a fatigued operator is hardly a safe operator.  Uwe Weiner of IWS Handling, well known to our regular conference delegates, will explain the European guidelines on this subject and share recent research results. His session will include a review of a new seat to combat this and an update on his recently redesigned, safer, powered pallet truck.

Pedestrian alert

Separating fork lift trucks and pedestrians remains a key safety concern – and that is why it was chosen again as the main theme for the National Fork Lift Safety Week. The new STILL FM-X laser-guided automated reach truck, winner of the Safety category at Awards 2009, can be used with or without an operator – breaking new ground in safety. The fork lift truck’s rotating scanner continually watches its surrounding and can detect anyone walking into its working area. STILL will explain how the system works and discuss the safety benefits of such equipment.

At the tipping point

A fatal tipping incident could be described as the ultimate fork lift truck catastrophe – and it’s one that continues to happen more often than people may think.  Robert Brame will introduce Gravloc, a new safety device that uses gravity and hydraulic pressure to sense a platform’s movement and takes remedial action should the truck become unstable. Gravloc is a component that can be ‘added’ to existing equipment (i.e. retrofitted) or incorporated into the design and manufacture of a new product.
