Driver Andy Peaker from Yorkshire has beaten more than 50,000 other British commercial drivers in a national safer driving competition organised by Leeds telematics company Masternaut Three X. The GBP 2,500 cash reward from Masternaut Three X will be shared with road safety charity, Brake.
Using Masternaut Three X’s technology, GreenerFleet, to monitor vehicles, the Drive For Life initiative recognises and rewards the safest commercial drivers with the quarterly cash rewards.
Each quarter, the driver who is making the most effort to keep themselves and other road users safe will receive GBP 1,250 with road safety charity Brake receiving a matched donation.
Truck driver Peaker, 37, was entered into the competition by his employer, Total Food Service Solutions of Huddersfield, in January 2009. For three months, his driving – along with 50,000 others – was tracked and monitored using the web-based satellite tracking service. His performance was deemed good enough to place him in the final, along with four other drivers.
Only then did Peaker, who drives 25,000 miles a year, learn he was in the running for the cash prize. “I’m extremely proud to have earned this award,” says Peaker. “The best bit is that it’s based purely on the fact I make it my business, always, to drive carefully. It feels great that my strong belief in sticking to speed limits and ‘always expect the unexpected’ has been recognised and rewarded”.
The five finalists completed an online risk awareness assessment developed in collaboration with risk management organisation Drive and Survive. They then presented a case to a judging panel consisting of five leading industry, community and business figureheads who decided on the winner.
Martin Port, Managing Director at Masternaut Three X, and brainchild behind the scheme says, “Eight people die everyday on UK roads. Commercial vehicles, such as trucks, vans, coaches and buses, account for 1 in 5 of all road deaths – yet commercial vehicles account for only 1.7% of all vehicles on our roads.
Former Chief Constable Dr Keith Hellawell QPM is one of the high profile judges, who comments: “A moments lapse in concentration when driving can have horrific consequences for anyone, however, those who drive for a living are especially at risk because its more common for them to be overtaken by exhaustion or become ‘zoned out’. This must be addressed if we are to reduce death and serious injury to themselves and other road users.”
