Following on from an incredibly successful launch in October 2008, Belgravium have incorporated the new-to-market EX25 near-far imager into the Belgravium Boston 8500 series terminal.
Until recently, laser scanners were the dominant choice for warehouse and distribution center applications, based on their ability to scan bar code labels at long range. Indeed, until now, long range (LR) and advanced long range (ALR) laser scanners were the only choice for reading bar code labels – so long as they were 1D labels – at greater-than-arms-length distance.
The availability of the EX25 Near-Far Area Imager, however, adds a powerful new long-range choice to the warehouse manager’s data capture toolkit, while simultaneously opening the door to a whole new set of capabilities.
The EX25 scan engine incorporates breakthrough auto-focus technology that enables it to read virtually any kind of bar code – not only 1D, but also all kinds of 2D codes, as well as composite and postal codes – at distances ranging from 6 inches to 50 feet, in any orientation. This flexibility and extended range enables companies to meet their current scanning needs more efficiently, consolidate their data capture needs into a single device, and apply the many benefits of area imaging across their total warehouse operations, today and in the future.
Because it’s an imager, the EX25 engine enables users to capture images suitable for proof-of-delivery and documentation of damaged, expired or unsealed goods. Its ability to read codes omni-directionally improves scanning efficiency: workers don’t need to align the scanner with the bar code to get a good read the first time.
The EX25 can also read bar codes printed on plain paper at long distances, eliminating the need for expensive retro-reflective label media. Its unique auto-focus technology ensures accurate, motion-tolerant scanning even when lighting conditions are dim or the codes to be read are damaged, obscured, or placed on high shelving.
The EX25 supports the changing demands of warehouse operations, including the increasingly rapid adoption of 2D symbologies by forward-looking companies across multiple industries. Voice Activated
As a true multi-modal terminal, the Boston can be configured to operate as a voice recognition terminal. An operative can receive instruction and enter data purely via voice command. Alternatively the terminal can be combined with manual entry and bar code / RFID scanning.
RFID Label Scanning
The Boston can read Low Frequency (125KHz) and High Frequency (13.56MHz) tags and labels. RFID scanning can be combined with bar code reading within the same unit and with no requirement for an additional external reader.
Multi-Radio Options
The Boston comes equipped with three radio variants ; Bluetooth – for near range connection to peripheral devices, such as mobile printers. Wi-Fi for Local Area Network (LAN) connectivity e.g. within the confines of a warehouse or other fixed location. GPRS for Wide Area Network (WAN) connectivity e.g. for data transfer between field workers and a central office location.
Barcode Scanning
The Boston is available with a range of scanning options including standard range, long range, extra long range and now near-far imaging.. The unit will read both 1D and 2D codes. Barcode scanning can be combined with RFID tag reading within the same unit and with no requirement for an additional external reader.
In Vehicle Satellite Navigation
The Boston is ideally suited as an in-vehicle terminal, when combined with an optional cradle. The unit can run standard GPS navigation software. This means that vehicle location can be combined with operational activities, such as proof-of-delivery signature capture or routing-scheduling, without the need for a separate navigation device.
Camera / Signature Capture
The Boston is equipped with a high resolution colour camera, making it ideal for recording acceptance of deliveries, logging of the condition of delivered goods, parking enforcement etc. A further element of ‘proof’ can be introduced via the use of the Boston’s signature capture facility.
