chazWelcome to the March 15 Warehouse & Logistics News. Once upon a time every schoolboy knew Julius Caesar was assassinated on the Ides of March (15.3), 44 BC. Shakespeare’s play Julius Caesar has some great advice for anyone plotting to make a killing in the 21st century AD warehousing and logistics business. Try this motivational dialogue from lead conspirator Brutus:

“There is a tide in the affairs of men which, taken at the flood, leads on to fortune; omitted, all the voyage of their life is bound in shallows and in miseries. On such a full sea are we now afloat, and we must take the current when it serves, or lose our ventures.”

Or this from fellow plotter Cassius: “Men at some time are masters of their fates. The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars?but in ourselves, that we are underlings.”

To help ensure your ventures lead on to fortune, we have two essential features – warehouse trucks and health & safety.

The vast choice of warehouse trucks on offer covers pallet, stacker, order picker, VNA and turret trucks and beyond. Anyone planning new warehouses or truck fleet expansions should seriously consider warehouse simulation before ordering anything. Most forklift manufacturers provide simulations using their kit: for a more impartial view, so do independent software houses and forklift consultants. The penalties for skimping on pre-modeling can be severe in terms of initial truck costs, warehouse rents, rates and utilities.

Our other feature is Health & Safety. It is a sad fact that in recessions, people are tempted to cut corners on health, safety and security issues. Don’t miss our look at the spectrum of precautionary measures.

Safety is at the heart of business for Caljan Rite-Hite, featured in this issue’s centre spread. Established over 40 years ago, Caljan Rite-Hite is worldwide market leader in safe logistics solutions for loading and unloading loose-loaded goods. It has designed, manufactured and installed more than 20,000 loading and unloading solutions in parcel distribution centres, airports, warehouses and storage facilities worldwide.

Our other ‘Ides of March’ feature is with palletised freight network Palletline, definitely masters of their fates, in Shakespeare’s terms. Palletline’s move into a new £20m central hub in Solihull (not that far from Stratford on Avon, for Shakespeare fans!) last October set a new gold standard in quality and sophistication for UK pallet networks. The new hub’s unique operational systems enable Palletline to process over 25,000 pallets in 24 hours.

But Palletline isn’t stopping there. Its new service innovation, City 24, addresses the problem of urban traffic congestion. It has recently taken on four new members, and also introduced a new livery for its members’ vehicles, adding up to taking a lead role in driving the UK pallet networks to new heights of excellence.
