Birmingham Intermodal Freight Terminal at Birch Coppice Business Park near Tamworth has won a much sought after civic award in the category for the contribution to employment in the region.

Acting on behalf of developer IM Properties the 13 month contract for the terminal at Birch Coppice alongside junction 10 of the M42 motorway north east of central Birmingham provides the Midlands region with its most sophisticated rail freight container handling facility. Up to six container freight trains per day travelling from sea ports of Southampton, Felixstowe and Thamesport use the freight facility owned and operated by Roadways Container Logistics (RCL).

Aspects of the construction programme unique to the 35 acre site was the laying of 2km (1.24 miles) of railway track for 2 huge dockside type mobile gantries to lift 12m (40ft) containers from rail wagons and transfer to road going vehicles. Two new bridges were constructed across existing rail sidings to provide a main access to the terminal and to facilitate internal traffic flow.

In total 9,700 cubic meters of ready mixed concrete was delivered to site – representing 1,600 lorry loads – to pave the way for a 12 acre hard standing for heavy goods vehicle parking and container storage and stacking park. One of the challenges facing Anglo Holt and Tamworth based civil engineering consultants Farebrothers was the design and installation of a storm water holding and discharge system constructed underground beneath the massive area of concrete hard standing. Designed to cope with a projected maximum rainfall of 769,000 gallons the ingenious bespoke system involved the laying of 77 interconnected 1.8 m (6 ft) diameter galvanised pipes stretching almost one mile.

“It is challenges such as this that stimulate the project team to produce effective solutions and it is the investment and commitment to the rail freight industry that has earned RCL the much deserved reward for locating its rail freight terminal in the heart of the west midlands.” said Anglo Holt director Tony Wehby

Tweedale the Wolverhampton based architects and planning consultants were responsible for the master planning of Birch Coppice Business Park and the award winning rail freight terminal.
