A vast amount of Durapipe ABS pipework has been installed, as part of a sophisticated smoke detection system within a new cold-storage warehouse in St Petersburg, Russia. Kupchino, a leading supplier of fresh and frozen foods, wanted a superior smoke detection system for its new 40 metre high cold-storage warehouse for meat and frozen food, to ensure the risk of fire was minimised.
11,500 metres of Durapipe ABS, in sizes 25mm and 40mm, now forms the basis of an air aspiration system at the facility. The pipework is used in a vacuum system and continuously sucks in air, which is transported to sensors located throughout the plant. The air is then continually sampled and tested and the sensors can detect the tiniest smoke particles within the atmosphere.
Specified by sub-contractor Aspo, Durapipe ABS offered exceptional installation benefits; the system needed to be fitted in the roof void and with such a large volume of pipework to be installed, the lightweight properties of Durapipe ABS meant it was significantly quicker and easier to both handle on site and install.
The corrosion resistant properties of Durapipe ABS were also an influencing factor; the sensors can only test clean air, so it is important the air transported through the system is not contaminated. The smooth bore of Durapipe ABS pipework ensures that clean air is maintained throughout the lifetime of the system.
Commenting on the specification of Durapipe ABS, the Deputy Director of Aspo said: “We have used Durapipe ABS many times previously and so we are confident of the high performance capabilities. For this project, the installation was complex due to the system being fitted in the roof void, which is why we chose Durapipe ABS; at 1/6 the weight of steel, we significantly saved on labour time and cost.
“Due to the way Durapipe ABS is performing in this application, we are specifying the product for four further air aspiration systems throughout Russia.”
