ssi-volkswagen.jpgIndustrial storage and partitioning specialist Troax UK Limited has designed a secure, wire mesh storage enclosure for vehicle manufacturer Volkswagen’s 650,000 sq ft national parts distribution centre in Dordon, Warwickshire. The enclosure is used to store high value vehicle accessories such as radios, CD players and Volkswagen badges. The project was carried out in conjunction with commercial space planning specialist SSI Schaefer who, to make the best use of the building’s height and so maximise storage space, decided to relocate an existing storage unit on the ground floor to the new custom-built enclosure on a three tier mezzanine floor level.

Troax used its Caelum wire mesh partitioning to build the new enclosure which offers an ideal storage solution for this type of facility; its versatile, modular construction means that storage units can be easily custom-designed to fit this type of mezzanine level and so make the best use of the available storage space.

The all-welded wire mesh panelling also offers other important advantages.  Its 50mm x 50mm mesh size offers a high level of security as the apertures are too small for a hand to reach through. And the panels’ design – they are constructed from steel mesh welded to a tubular frame, creates optimum strength between wire and tube.

Using wire mesh rather than solid steel partitioning offers other benefits too. The mesh creates a secure yet ‘translucent’ and fully visible environment, as well as improving ventilation, air circulation and lighting of the area.  Most importantly, the mesh also enables smoke and heat to filter through to trigger smoke detection systems and allows the effective penetration of sprinkler systems in the event of a fire.
Double and single padlockable hinged doors have been fitted to the enclosure to provide access for authorised warehouse staff.

Commenting on the project, Bob Jane at SSI Schaefer said: “We’ve built up an excellent working relationship with Troax over the years and rely on their excellent service, technical support and the quality of their products to help us achieve the quality standards we need to meet our clients’ requirements.  They’re very reliable and keep in touch throughout projects, both large and small, to keep us updated on progress.  Overall, we find that their innovative and well-designed products provide good solutions to many of our storage projects.”
Volkswagen’s distribution centre is owned and operated by CEVA Logistics.
