thermo-logo.jpgThe energy consumption, reliability and power-savings of Thermo King’s SG-3000 Series Generator Sets, first introduced midyear 2007, have caught the industry’s attention. The SG-3000 genset is the result of years of experience in designing and maintaining units for different climatic and operational conditions, and benefits from the most advanced technologies available.

“Essentially, it offers customers the option of enhanced operation, fuel savings, and ecological responsibility,” explained Pietro Sonza, marketing manager, Global Marine Solutions. “The SG-3000 gensets with EcoPower™ option more than doubles the fuel savings achieved with previous and competitor genset models. This translates into over $1,500 per year in fuel savings when calculating an average 2,000 hours per year operation base. Over the 10-12 year lifespan of a genset, more than the entire initial cost is saved in fuel. This fuel saving enhancement helps Thermo King reefer systems reduce emissions without affecting performance and without compromising cargo security.
As a result, customers get a low-emission, reliable source of electrical power for refrigerated containers in the SG-3000, no matter the ambient temperature or the load.”

Hardware and software enhancements and Thermo King’s patented EcoPower technology are at the foundation of the record performances of the SG-3000. Advanced engine technology, featuring an innovative high-pressure injection pump, patented cyclonic media air cleaner, the self-evacuating fuel filter, and the optional fuel sensor, which allows monitoring of fuel consumption, all contribute to managing the overall costs of this energy-efficient genset. “The SG+ controller, coupled with the fuel sensor option, constantly monitors and logs fuel consumption, triggering an operator alarm if excessive fuel tank content changes occur,” explained Sonza. “This feature further assists in cost management and ensures maximum cargo security. High fuel prices are putting a strain on the industry, and unfortunately have led to increased fuel thefts; the fuel sensor option provides peace of mind.”

Environmental Benefits
The SG-3000 genset series fully complies with the most recent Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations, which not only minimize the carbon footprint, but prevent unnecessary fines and headaches non-compliant genset users will face. OOCL and APL are being proactive in this fight and are touting their efforts through their own green campaigns.

OOCL
OOCL, which ordered 350 SG-3000 gensets in 2007, recently purchased an additional 400 – all incorporating EcoPower, fuel sensors, and the SG controller. The company is utilizing the environmentally-sound features of the SG-3000 to market its own green philosophies. “We worked with OOCL to trial this new EcoPower technology in 2007, and they have since retro-fitted EcoPower on all of their SG-3000 gensets.
Along with the considerable fuel savings, this also reflects OOCL’s well-recognized commitment to the environment,” said Dennis Trusler, director, container sales, Asia Pacific. “We’re excited about our continued partnership and like-views when it comes to environmentally-friendly technology.”

According to OOCL’s website, the company believes that by taking a proactive role in caring for the environment, it can help minimize its carbon footprint, as well as other harmful pollutants such as sulphur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matters, and make the world a better place to live. The company voluntarily cooperates with many programs and standards around the world, and has received numerous awards and recognitions for its achievements and quality practices.

“The SG-3000, the most fuel efficient genset available, along with the MAGNUM® reefer, which offers the lowest power consumption in the industry, are helping OOCL in their fight to protect the environment,” said Trusler.

OOCL purchased 3,600 MAGNUM units in 2007 and another 4,300 in 2008.

APL
APL, a unit of Singapore-based Neptune Orient Lines, a global transportation and logistics company, has been purchasing Thermo King gensets for more than a decade, and added 815 of the new SG-3000 series – all with EcoPower, fuel sensors, and the SG controller – in 2007.
The performance in fuel and power savings, along with the improved environmental attributes, led to an additional order of 1,000 units in 2008.

As a global provider of transportation and related services, APL is dedicated to preserving and enhancing the environment in which it conducts its business. Making sound equipment choices is one way in complementing such efforts.

According to Dennis Yee, Vice President, equipment management, APL, “Responsible environment management is a cornerstone of our operations. Thermo King’s new SG-3000 gensets have low emission and high fuel efficiency that help us to meet our overall objective to protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint.”
