front-sep.jpgWelcome to the 1 September Warehouse & Logistics News, the latest edition of the UK’s number one title for the industry. In this issue we bring you a bumper serving of the latest information to help your business rise to today’s challenges, including a double measure of forklift truck know-how. First, by special request of the Fork Lift Truck Association, our FLTA 2008 Safety Conference supplement contains full details of ‘Safe Operations,’ this year’s gathering convened by the FLTA to address the crucial subject of Fork Truck Safety. The Conference takes place at Warwick University on Thursday 25th September: enclosed with this issue is the official guide, for you to keep.

Staying with the theme of industrial truck excellence, this issue’s other feature, Warehouse Trucks & Pallet Trucks, looks at the latest developments in warehouse trucks, outdoor trucks and specialist machines.

It’s always encouraging to see businesses overcoming adversity. In our Products pages you can read the inspiring story of leading foodservice supply chain company Keystone Distribution UK, which returns to Hemel Hempstead with a brand new 22,800 sq m distribution centre. The move follows the Buncefield Oil Depot explosion in December 2005, which destroyed Keystone’s previous depot there. Featuring Union Industries’ market-leading Eiger Doors, the new 46-dock facility is the size of five football pitches.

On the broad economic front, the British Chambers of Commerce says UK growth will be “slightly negative or zero” in the next two or three quarters. Technically that adds up to a recession, but the BCC insist a major recession is unlikely if the Government acts now. Our governing bodies have learnt how best to use their cash on sporting development, and it certainly paid off in Beijing: it’ll take more than Lottery cash but now the other Team GB, Team Gordon Brown, must do much the same for the economy to get it healthy again.

In difficult times the best possible approach is a long-term view. In this issue we have an exclusive interview with Mike Pooley, newly appointed Vice President Country General Manager to the UK and Ireland at CHEP, the global leader in pallet and container pooling. The Australian Government formed CHEP in 1945 as the Commonwealth Handling Equipment Pool, to collect materials left at military bases. Now a private company, it serves many of the world’s largest companies and issues, collects and reissues over 300 million pallets and containers through its global network. CHEP recently reorganised its European business to better meet its growth needs and decentralised some core functions to provide a country focus. At the same time it has put programmes in place to highlight its role in helping clients meet their environmental obligations.

Have a successful month, and happy reading.

Charles Smith
