With approaching 300 M&Co retail stores in the UK, Mackays are one of the largest privately owned fashion retailers in the UK. To be able to handle an ever expanding retail portfolio in the Spring of 2007, larger premises were sought. As specialist suppliers of garment handling and storage equipment, as well as a range of conveyor equipment, plus in-house designed control systems, CI Logistics were approached to create a turnkey solution.
The building chosen, with a warehouse floor area of 110,000sq.ft, allowed a scheme to be created on two floors, which incorporates a garment distribution facility consisting of a static garment hanging store, powered overhead rail system for garment movement and order accumulation on the upper floor. On the ground floor, a powered roller conveyor system handles the movement of boxed goods, using inclined belts for boxed good movements between floors, 5-way automatic sortation for outbound boxed goods and powered boom loaders. Stretchaveyors are used for dockside handling. The final system enables inbound hanging garments and boxed goods to be routed into the designated areas of the warehouse as well as providing a direct link between picking areas and the despatch doors.
With the system having three elements; hanging garment storage and movement, boxed goods handling and transport and an integrated control system allowed CI Logistics to offer Mackays a ‘one stop shop’ with all the advantages of a single supplier to ensure the project was truly integrated.
The system was successfully installed to extremely tight deadlines and Bryce Howie the IT and Logistics Director said that “the design of the scheme allows production efficiencies at every stage of the distribution process and gives scope for further expansion and automation in the future”
