Newcastle-based Permatt Fork Lift Trucks Ltd, are celebrating a 10 year relationship with one of the country’s largest agricultural merchants, Carrs Billington of Carlisle. Permatt now supply nationwide some 38 TCM diesel powered fork lift trucks to six mills and 17 retail outlets of Carrs Biilington from Carmarthen in South Wales up to Perth in Scotland under five year maintenance contracts. Carrs Billington Operations Engineer, Nigel Hillyer, commented, “We took the decision to go with Permatt and TCM trucks 10 years ago and have never regretted it! The trucks are robust, well built and offered excellent reliability, but what really clinched the deal was the service that Permatt offered.
We deliver over 700,000 tonnes of feeds to farms in the UK every year in bulk and in bags to allow more remote farms to handle the foodstuffs more easily and reliable forklifts are vital. We also operate in some remote rural areas and the trucks are worked hard, often in dusty environments – Permatt’s response time to breakdowns of under two hours and the availability of replacement trucks was ideally suited to our own requirements.”
Mark Percy, Managing Director of Permatt, added, “The spread of the Carrs Billington operation is massive, but distance is no object to our fleet of mobile engineers – we know that under normal circumstances all these trucks require is a regular service to keep them running, and on the rare occasions that they have a problem, our team is just a phone call away.”
“Carrs Billington mainly have 2500kg capacity diesel counterbalance trucks with cabs and side shift operating at the Carlisle HQ with a variety of other models spread through their nationwide branches. We run regular service visits to them all and all the braches have access to our emergency service – we’ve built up a great relationship with al the branches and their drivers and managers which we’re looking forward to continuing.”
Established in 1981 and operating from their own custom-built 8,000 sq ft premises on the Camperdown Estate in Killingworth, Permatt currently employ 19 staff with an annual turnover of £2.5m.

I`m the Branch Manager for Carrs Billington Agriculture Sales ,Hexham, Barnard Castle and Morpeth depots and have found Permatt`s service level excellent.
We have recently upgraded our f/lift at B Castle to a TCM 4 tonne model with side shift which has impressed me,my staff and alot of the drivers who deliver to our site .
