adrain-logo.jpgOne Birmingham company is dramatically reducing its carbon footprint, and doing its bit to help the environment by putting its workplace equipment catalogue online and on cd. Welco is working to encourage its customers to select products electronically and then order online to reduce the need for a printed catalogue. One of the first UK companies to pioneer sales from a business catalogue, Welco, is now one of the first in its market to lead the way for cd and digital catalogues. This month saw the launch of its product catalogue exclusively for the health sector.

The move to a digital edition followed a detailed customer research programme to test out response to a move away from the traditional book-based method of ordering. Feed-back, particularly from government departments, health and education sectors, revealed growing concerns for companies like Welco to reduce its carbon footprint and adopt more environment friendly methods.

Welco’s chief executive said “The response is very encouraging. The message about the environment and the part everyone can play is gaining momentum. Traditionally, we did everything to meet changing demands for water based inks, printing on paper that complied with Forestry Stewardship Council guidelines, and recycled / oxo-degradable packages. But we were conscious we could do more.

“Since launching the cd-rom editions, we are beginning to see an increase in the numbers of direct and on-line orders. Perhaps we really are moving towards the paperless office.”

Welco tested out the market with the introduction of a 56 page version of their famous 1000 page Big Book product catalogue, which was sent electronically to customers. Sophisticated software allowed Welco to monitor response and track customer traffic to the on-line brochure.
Further discussions with customers revealed that the new format addressed environmental issues while providing an immediate direct ordering process that improved customer service.

Reeve added “Welco has always been an innovative company. Once our customers made their preferences clear, we started work to get more and more companies to adopt new ordering processes”

With sales running at 22% above the same period last year, clearly an environmentally friendly decision.
